BEMA IS...

BEMA, the ‘arts in harmony network’, is the organisation for those of us who believe that art can change the world for the better. It is an informal alliance of individual artists, arts organisations, promoters, producers and others with an interest in developing cultural activity as a means of promoting tolerance, equality and education. Though essentially a network whose main focus are those communities that have traditionally benefited the least from available resources, the BEMA family welcomes membership applications from all sectors and cultural groups. We firmly believe that it is possible and indeed essential, for diverse individual artist and groups of artists to work in harmony and to mutual benefit, regardless of social status, or of racial, ethnic or cultural background; and irrespective of artistic discipline or genre, without compromising the aspirations of one another.

Launch of the C.L.R. James Exhibition at the C.L.R. James Library this Friday...

As most of you are aware BEMA led a campaign to retain the name C.L.R. James Library in Dalston when the facility was relocated to a new £4.4 million development.

C.L.R. James was a writer, historian and social activist who had an impact on every continent in the world. The library was named in his honour as a tribute to not only him, but also the local black community.

We are delighted to announce that BEMA’s Chief Officer Ngoma Bishop will be joining Selma James, widow of C.L.R. to launch a permanent exhibition dedicated to his life and legacy.

Given that BEMA and our members and supporters were instrumental in the success of the campaign we would like to see as many of our friends there as possible.

The launch event is scheduled to take place as follows:

After the launch there will also be two film screenings of ‘Fire in Babylon’—a documentary film about the world beating, highly successful West Indies Cricket Team of the 1970s and 1980s. The film corresponds closely with the work of C.L.R. James whose book--Beyond a Boundary--is widely acknowledged as the best book ever written on cricket.

MISSION STATEMENT

“To continuously work to improve access to sustainable business growth opportunities, through the supply of information, advocacy and the delivery of appropriate demand led cultural, art and creative industries support services”

OBJECTIVES

The Company's objectives are to:

Support the development of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) community based organisations engaged in arts training, marketing, promotion and / or production.

Facilitate the development of a range of arts focussed forums, partnerships and consortia comprising artistically and culturally diverse membership.

Plan, organize and promote art based events, projects, conferences and other activity either as a sole agency, or in partnership with others.

Represent the interest of the BAME arts community, by engaging with appropriate local and regional structures, strategic and partnerships and with other bodies, institutions and individuals whose activities impact on local arts and on the activities of the organization’s members and target group.

Seek to maximise the financial and other resources accessible to the BAME arts sector.

PROGRAMMES AND SERVICES

Subject to capacity and resources, BEMA will develop a range of responsive, core client services. Continuously developing and delivering innovative programmes and practical initiatives, which maximise public and private sector investment and commercial trading opportunities for BEMA members, by;

Capacity building - BEMA will provide a rolling programme of developing opportunities with a specific arts focus. Programmes will include planning and managing arts projects and helping to raise funds for projects. This programme will aim to not duplicate offerings made through training courses already accessible.

Referral Services - BEMA recognizes that it cannot be all things to all people and that there are many other organisations providing services that could be of value to its members. BEMA will therefore establish good links to 3^rd parties such as HCVS, funding bodies, consultancies, local colleges, strategic bodies, and other BEMA members in order to actively refer or signpost clients/members, on where appropriate. BEMA will endeavour to follow up where possible to ensure that the clients’/members’ capacity, development and other needs have been met.

Lobbying - In a changing political and economical climate in which resources are always limited, it is important that the Creative Arts Sector has a voice. BEMA will seek to act as the single point of contact for the BAMER Arts Sector in Hackney and adjacent boroughs, and advocate on its behalf to ensure it is getting the best deal possible and delivering as well as it might.

Brokerage - BEMA will actively identify links between members and other appropriate bodies in order to exploit opportunities for creative and/or public benefits.

Partnership - As a collective of small organisations acting independently, the BAME Arts Sector has in the past found it difficult to engage with larger funding or commissioning bodies. BEMA will develop relationships between organisations to enable development of medium and large scale projects and take the lead in bidding for appropriate funds to support these.

Diversity Festival - BEMA intends to drive a programme of events and activities that showcase the artists’ talents of local groups, but also enable such groups to develop and hone their skills. An annual Cultural Diversity Festival with a preceding associated programme of workshops running from June to September will offer local people and visitors the opportunity to enjoy creative offerings from a culturally diverse range of artiste and artistic bodies. A more detailed paper on this festival is available from the organisation.

Annual Arts Conference - In times characterized by pressure and underachievement amongst BAME communities (young people in particular), the arts can play a significant role in communicating with target audiences and addressing social decline. BEMA will plan and host an annual arts conference or symposium where the role and contribution of the creative arts industries to all aspects of society can be discussed and plans of actions drawn up.

BEMA ARTS DEVELOPMENT FORUMS

As a means of enabling a broad based programme of artistic projects and activity and to enable mutually supportive development, BEMA has established nine forums where organisations focussed on particular artforms provide each other with support and develop mutually beneficial partnerships and consortia. There is a similar forum for individual artists. These ten forums have delegated authority to develop their own programmes within the parameters of BEMA’s overall priorities and objectives. Each forum will include a lead organisation with the capacity to act as a mentor for smaller or less developed members.

· Encourage and enable forum members and organisations to develop partnerships and collaborative initiatives (including cross sector and multi art-form activities)

· Convene meetings, seminars & conferences in order to highlight issues of interest or concern to forum members and to affect and influence strategic and policy decisions impacting on areas of interest to forum members

· Identify and access sources of capital, revenue and project funding for forum members

· Encourage member groups and individuals to affiliate to appropriate regulatory bodies - providing support where possible.

Leslie Laniyan

Leslie Laniyan was previously chairman of the Federation of Black Housing Organisations a national based organisation representing Black and Minority Ethnic(BME) led Housing Association in England. He is also the former Chair of African Refugee Housing Association Group (ARHAG) which is one of the few housing associations in the UK focusing on the needs of the migrant communities. Leslie is the Vice Chair of Odu Dua Housing Association a BME led housing association based in the UK. Leslie is a former Chair of Faith Regen UK which is a national organisation attempting to bridge the gap between the various faiths in the UK through regeneration, he still retains membership of the Board. Leslie is a former member of the Pentecostal Credit Union whose focus is to address issues surrounding financial exclusion.

Leslie is currently the Managing Director of Shian Housing Association a BME led Housing Association based in London which has been involved in and responsible for a broad spectrum of building and construction projects ranging from simple refurbishment of a single property up to and including the rebuilding of a new estate. He was previously Regional Manager with Ujima Housing Association largest Black Led Housing Association in England. Leslie is an active mentor and a graduate from the London School of Economics.

Janice Wynter

Janice Wynter was until recently the Advice & Information Manager/Project Co-ordinator at Age Concern Hackney, managing and providing advice services for older residents in the borough of Hackney. She led on a partnership project with Age Concern, London Borough of Hackney Social Services and London and Greater London Leisure that campaigned for the rights of older and disabled tenants and residents in order for them to achieve free exercise provisions.

As Project Co-ordinator working closely with housing providers on two main estates in Hackney Janice successfully facilitated and managed The Woodberry Downs Elders Project in providing a safe haven for older people on the estates living through one of the biggest regeneration projects in Europe. Through the work carried out she secured funding to provide a purpose build day centre for the older people on the estate. The project achieved the Hackney Council for Voluntary Services (HCVS) sponsored Adiaha Antigha Award for services to older people.

Trained at the Hackney Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB), her background is in legal advice and she has delivered an outreach welfare benefit advice to residents of Clapton Community Housing Trust.

Janice is currently the BEMA secretary and has held this post for the past three years and has a strong commitment to assisting and empowering arts groups and individual artists to be recognised and their voices heard within the community.

Dennis Bartholomew

Dennis Bartholomew, the University of Reading’s Equality and Diversity Officer, has worked as an equality and diversity professional for over twenty years. He started his career in local government as a Race Equality (Special Projects) Officer, where he developed and launched the UK’s first voting rights campaign, designed to encourage the participation of members of the BME community in the life of their community.

In 2000, he joined the consumer body, Citizens Advice, as their National Equality Manager, establishing, amongst other things, regional equality networks for Citizens Advice Bureaux in the organisation’s six English regions and in Cymru.

In 2003, he returned to local government, joining the London Borough of Sutton as their Equality Officer.

In 2008, Dennis was appointed an equality peer assessor by the local government Improvement and Development Agency and subsequently assessed the performance of two English local authorities.

12 2011 Dennis shared the role of BEMA representative on the steering group for the launch of the newly developed CLR James Library building in Dalston Square

His other significant achievements to date include: -

· Developing the capacity of the CABx equality groups, including its Women’s Forum;

· Working with colleagues in Sutton to develop an equality scheme - which saw the organisation achieve high scores in its equality assessment;

· Established the Sutton Women’s Forum, including , in 2008, the first celebration of International Women’s Day in the borough; and

· Securing funding for Sutton’s Women’s Centre,

Ngoma Bishop

Ngoma ‘Silver’ Bishop has been Chair of BEMA since its inception some ten (10) years ago. During that time he has been instrumental in developing all of the organisation’s core governance and policy documents, as well as developing the BEMA Cluster Development Project and many of the organisation’s project and administration programmes. Ngoma was the driving force behind the successful BEMA led campaign to ensure that the name CLR James Library was retained when Hackney Council replaced the old building with a brand new state of the art facility as part of the Dalston Development. Ngoma has a broad range of experience in the third (community and voluntary), public and private sector having worked in many different fields including; community development, urban regeneration, finance and fund-raising, advice giving, advocacy and campaigning. An active artist and founder member of the I-Storians (poets and edutainers) Ngoma continues to perform live spoken word, his work and activities includes:

· Writer of songs, short stories and other creative material

· Creative writing workshop facilitator

· With Oma-Ra, author of ‘The Whole Story’ (poems, observations and anecdotes)

· Spread Your Wings & Fly - a biographical fiction novel

· Edited, co-published and contributed to ‘Black I Am - An Anthology of Poetry & Prose’

· Director and promoter of comic Reggae musical drama ‘Cockroach inna Di Kitchen’; (venues included the Hackney Empire)

· Promoter and producer of dozens of arts based events

· Former freelance journalist and columnist

· Founder and Chair of the House of AMAU, an African Caribbean led arts organisation

· Founder and FA qualified coach of a community football club

Andrea Enisuoh - BEMA Project Manager

Andrea Enisuoh is a journalist, editor, writer and literature consultant. She was until recently arts columnist for New Nation and part time coordinator of the Centerprise Literature Development Project. Her articles and essays have been published in publications such as PRIDE magazine, the Times Literary Supplement and the Evening Standard. She is also a pundit on BBC Radio 4’s leading arts programme Front Row. Andrea recently set up Means of Expression, a literary consultancy specialising in working with new and emerging writers of colour.

As Bema Project coordinator she works to ensure the smooth running of Bema's community projects.

The new C.L.R. James Library

    March 2010 - BEMA attends the Community Empowerment REACH conference and makes such an impression that within seventy two hours membership had been increased by 15%

· September 2010 - October 2010 - BEMA leads successful campaign to get Hackney Council to reverse its decision to drop the name CLR James from the rebuilt library on the multi million facility being built in the new Dalston Square Development. The campaign was supported locally, nationally and internationally, by organisations, academics, politicians, educationalists, artists and ordinary members of the public. Over a period of a few weeks 3,000 signed an online petition and sent messages of support. Following the campaign BEMA was invited to form part of the steering group responsible for ensuring a successful launch of the new facility and establishing both a permanent tribute to the great man and an annual celebration of his work.

· 24 February 2011 - BEMA stages ‘Art of the Big Society’, a conference for artists and arts organisations in Hackney, which looked at how the current local and national government cuts impact on black, Asian & ethnic minority art, artists and arts organisations. The event was held at Graeae Theatre in Shoreditch.

· March 2011 - BEMA begins a series of talks with the Hackney Olympic and Paralympics Unit and with the BBC to discuss how Hackney artists and arts organisations can participate in the 2012 Olympiad.

· 4July 2011 - BEMA hosts the highly successful and over subscribed Arts Council of England (ACE) funding advice workshop. The event, resulting from an ‘Art of the Big Society’ recommendation and ACE commitment; was attended by representatives of groups and organisations from across the capital. The event was held at Hackney CVS.

· 6 July 2011 - BEMA attends the second Community Empowerment Network REACH conference at Morley Hall and receives the REACHING SUCCESS award for the Most Influential Community Network. The award was given for BEMA’s high impact work and ability to deliver quality services despite being in receipt of no core funding.

A photographic exhibition presented by Hackney Refugee and Migrant Support Group and Women Asylum Seekers Together (London). The photographs highlight the conditions migrants and refugees experience today and raise questions about the detrimental impact on them if the proposed cuts in legal aid are implemented.

Cuts in legal aid

Legal aid is provided by the Government to fund legal advice and representation at court for people who cannot afford it. Over half a million people will lose out, according to the Government's own figures, if the legal aid budget is to be cut by £350 million. Legal aid for advice and representation on immigration, housing and benefits will become severely restricted.

Hackney's own contribution to this year's East London CREATE festival, now in its fourth year, starts on June 24th and ends on 25 July. Once again the Hackney Fringe Festival will promote local arts and cultural activities in the run up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Hackney Council is compiling an online listings guide and is keen to hear from arts and community groups that are planning a cultural event in Hackney during the festival period.

Already in the stocks for Hackney during CREATE11 month are Kano performing live at the Hackney Empire (7^th July), the Midnight Run, a nocturnal 12-hour walk across East London which will stop for a spooky storytelling session at Dalston’s infamous “Bunker” (2^nd July), and a mini catwalk show at the Dalston Roof Park (July 24^th).

BEMA and London Borough of Hackney (Olympics 2012 Unit) are working together to help inform members of the how they can get involved with the Olympics in terms of the overall celebrations.

At a special half-day event at the end of the month BEMA and Hackney’s Olympic 2012 unit will be on hand to give members and supporters all the information they need.

Olympic and Paralympic Head Charlie Forman will give an introduction to the Games Time activities outlining the opportunities Hackney will have in terms of creating the best possible experience for Hackney’s residents, draw in visitors from London and further afield, maximise the potential for corporate hospitality and use the Games to enhance Hackney’s image and reputation.

· Games Time - the overall calendar for the games and how the arts will be profiled.

Ros Barthelmy graduated from St Martin’s School of Art after completing a 4 year BA (HONS) Sandwich Degree in Fashion Design and Marketing. After a number of years working in design, Ros went on to work as an artist with children and young people in education who were disaffected, experiencing difficulties or displaying challenging behaviour within mainstream learning. Ros developed creative art responses with children and young people to support their learning difficulties and challenging behaviour.

Through working with children Ros became aware that by giving constructive feedback to the children’s parents, she found herself often supporting the parents with parenting and social issues that were impacting on their children’s social and emotional behaviour. This family support progressed to Ros moving on to working and intensively supporting families as a family support co-ordinator. After 11 years of supporting families and coordinating services, Ros chose to extend her professional skills further and decided to combine her love of working creatively and supporting people and explore Art Therapy, which she then did.

Ironically, Ros found a metaphor with her professional experience of working with families who are affected by mental health and relationship breakdowns with her own artistic style coinciding with her long association and inspiration of Sub Cultures and Street Decay. This connection has subsequently gone on further to inspire her mixed media collages, some of which are exhibited here today. Whilst exploring art therapy, Ros found the therapeutic benefits of art and therapies. It is this discovery that led Ros to develop her own concept of “Social Art Therapy” and form her company nurcha.it which works with marginalised groups of people to bring about personal growth and social change.

Through the application of using various materials, Ros has developed a unique artistic style that uses a variety of techniques to express her emotional responses to mood and environmental factors - inspired by random images and textures that are often found deteriorated within urban street environments. Layers of worn, peeling paint, advertising posters that expose interesting hidden marks go towards inspiring Ros to manipulate and re-work her collages to produce similar effects. Ros often finds herself relating this therapeutic process to the complexities of keeping or burying personal “stuff” that can be explored or revealed at a later stage...

“We all “keep” things, whether it is our choice to “keep” these things to ourselves - or to “reveal” these things... Equally some of these things, these random marks and images may never come to light to reveal their meaning...”. Ros prefers to use a spontaneous, unstructured approach to creating her art work. “...Beauty and meaning are in the eye of the beholder; therefore this collection of artwork is for the voyeur to gain either; an aesthetic appreciation of the work, to enjoy it or to find themselves being curious to unfold the possibilities of the works potential meaning. - Alternatively, one may choose just to walk by...”

Hi and welcome once more to the BEMA newsletter,

First the good news. Plans for the new CLR James Library in Dalston are progressing nicely – and just to prove it we have a hot off the press picture of the new signage. Thanks once again to everyone that supported us in the campaign to retain the name of CLR James for the library.

Since the last edition of our e-newsletter many more individuals and organisations have joined BEMA and membership has grown by about 10%. While a good thing, this increase also means we are swamped with information to send out. We are aware our members don’t want to be overwhelmed with emails from us so we will try and limit the amount we send to e-newsletters and the occasional e-bulletin. Please realise this means there is no guarantee that we can promote the information you send us, but you have a much better chance if you send it in good time and also make the information clear and concise.

We hope that you find this edition interesting – especially our interview with Jazz legend and BEMA member Ray Carless. As ever we welcome any suggestions or thoughts you have on the direction in which BEMA is moving.

Acclaimed British actor Rudolph Walker OBE invites you to the grand finale of his Inter Schools Drama Award. Seven schools from across London will compete for the coveted title of ‘Best Play’, judged by a celebrity panel.

The veteran actor, who can currently be seen playing Patrick Trueman in EastEnders, was moved to support school drama in Brixton in the 1970s due to the social unrest rife in the area at the time. Through his me...ntoring Rudolph helped many young black actors break into the industry. And he has now decided to bring this idea to life across London.

Pioneering Walker was the first black actor to appear in a major British TV series. His breakthrough role as Bill in sitcom Love Thy Neighbour led to a long and varied acting career.

Present at the finale will be each of the schools actor mentors who include Wil Johnson (Waking the Dead, Waterloo Road), Danny John Jules (Red Dwarf), Angela Wynter (EastEnders), Little Miss Jocelyn (BBC2), Cyril Nri (The Bill), Martina Laird (Casualty).

The celebrity judging panel includes stars Shane Ritchie (EastEnders), Jake Wood and Kate Williams (Love Thy Neighbour).

Kasai Masai (Congo)

After appearances at Womad 2006, Sarawak Rainforest Festival Malaysia 2008 and El Poble Espanyol Barcelona 2009, London based Kasai Masai have become renowned party rockers. Blending traditional Congolese sounds with a modern twist, their energetic and upbeat live sets are well renowned. KM is composed of musicians who have played with some of the best African artists, like Madiata, Defao, Langa Langa All Stars, Franco & TP OK Jazz and Wenge Musica. Nickens has also played with Quartier Latin of Koffi Olomide, recorded with Papa Wemba, Kanda Bongoman, Zaiko Lang Langa and many more. Festival of Yoruba Arts is an annual open air free festival celebrating the rich, vibrant and colorful tradition and cultures of the Yoruba’s, through a variety of artistic mediums of cultural, aesthetic and educational value.
